Take Five: 5 Creators I’ve Been Messing With In 2020 By Clairy Browne

Do you find yourself spending endless hours scrolling through the internet for things to keep you motivated through this wild ride of a year we call 2020? In this weeks edition of Take Five, we step into the browser history of Melbourne vocalist Clairy Browne, uncovering five of her favourite creators she's messing with right now.

In this kaleidoscopic vortex of product placement and shout outs for merchandise, I thought it would be refreshing to forget about all the meaningless purchases I have made this year and make space for the people that give me creative inspiration. I love stuff and I could happily talk about my 5 favourite skincare products or the 5 best natural wines I have tried lately, but I love sharing discovered inspiration more. Even if I have spent 9 solid months scrolling my phone and being introspective and in existential crisis, I've been energized by some gifted artists that have helped me get through!

LILAH BENNETI

Lilah is such an inspiring force to be reckoned with. She is a multi-talented creative who has made strong impressions via multiple mediums with style, grace and intention. Whether its taking photos, flexing her design skills, re-purposing vintage furniture for her company No Ordinary Design or giving creative direction with her latest visual project, the film Inscape feat. Akosia, Lilah serves us all a healthy dose of stunning!

Inscape is a breath-taking and beautiful visual dream that Lilah says "speaks directly to the influence our physical space has on our sensed space, its impact on our mental state and in turn our reality"

Everything Lilah creates inspires me and straight-up floors me and witnessing her creativity is a privilege. You also might catch her being hot and talented in my music video 'Not the Only' because she's bad like that.

POOKIE

Pookie is a super gifted rapper and producer who has lit up my lockdown! She uses her music to help channel the dissonance she feels between growing up as a South Sudanese woman in white Australia and the challenges life throws up.

Her flow is confident, bouncy in a super sexy way and hooky, such a vibe.

Pookie is just straight fire, she was blowing up my speakers recently and my friend commented that she didn't think there'd been bars this sick out of this country and I'm inclined to agree.

Pookie gives me life with her latest track Tuesday that she wrote mid-quarantine with the most sickening bars and a hook that doesn't let up. Pookie says "Tuesday is about quality over quantity in your circles. It's about solitude, the hustle, self-guidance and even offers some advice on how to deal with time-wasters"

Thank you, Pookie for my favourite track of 2020 right here. Also, her styling is iconic and cool, I'm a little bit in love.

EVANGELINE

I met Evie when we did a show together a few years ago in a green room and I was immediately all about her infectious energy and brooding dark-pop tones. We've been writing songs together and being each others hype-man ever since.

Evangeline is one of the hardest working mf's I know, she knows what she wants and she's been building on her sad girl dark pop aesthetic and style for years and it's so inspiring to see it all really take shape with her latest EP I Think About It Way Too Much.

Every moment on this shiny little obsidian creeps in and spins you out, it turns a mirror on you and takes you through a sullen self-examination of interpersonal social dynamics, navigating anxiety and self-doubt in a world that's full of parties with too many people and expectations. It's the perfect soundtrack for my 2020 if I'm honest, a slow decline into valium haze and a landscape of utterly confused but hypnotic euphoria.

Plus, her looks all kill and her lyrics are my current religion.

KOBI SPICE

'Spicy Mami' Kobi is a total cutie with a charismatic personality and takes no shit and I've been so keen for her to drop the single "Throwin' Ass" ever since she leaked some bars up on her Instagram I was like, this slaps. I love this girl because not only is she super talented with a fire flow, she has epic drive and she is funny, she knows how to work her lyrics and when she spits I find myself grinning.

Kobi is such a dynamic little powerhouse who speaks her mind and gives me something to look forward to for summer when she releases the track I've been gagging for.

JUNE JONES

I have been seduced by June Jones and her romantic surging synth-y dream-pop since she released her album, 'Diana', last year and this year in the midst of this Melbourne Draconian lockdown that is life now, she's given another gem, the single Jenny (Breathe) which is her first self-produced moment and I love it, it's such a beautiful glimpse into her mind, the production is really cool and the video gives me real Twin Peaks-y vibes.

Although I have followed her for a minute now, we met last year sitting on the backyard steps at a house party and shared a ciggy and talked some shit I don't remember but my lasting impression was - I can't wait to hear what she does next because this babe is the perfect blend of sadness and sass in her sound and her whole vibe is electric.
